Distortion gives you plenty of gain, but without things sounding full on broken (which is fuzz territory). There is huge diversity from distortion pedals. "Distortion" is often a bit of a catch all phrase. There are low gain pedals, high gain metal pedals as well as pedals which have their own characteristics and colour your tone in a certain way.
