Pitch shifters allow you play octaves up and down, but also notes in between the octaves. This allows you to create some really cool harmonies and voices. Many also have a detune setting which can sound modulation like. Other more advanced pitch shifters let you create pitch shifted arpeggios or other sequence patterns.
